I know... fluffy bunnies and chicks are so cute and cuddly, aren't they? And the excitement and delight of baskets filled with chocolate eggs is hard to resist. So if you're like me, you may struggle to share the real meaning of Easter with your kids/ grandkids without feeling it's little more than a lesson. How can you compete?

Well, maybe we don't have to. There are ways to share the important truth of the Easter story without losing the attention of your kids. And, there are simple ideas, family traditions and meaningful memories you can build this Easter.


You'll find here a selection of seven activities. Use them to connect with your children and provide opportunities to remind them of Easter and God's amazing rescue plan.




1. FAMILY TRADITIONS ARE IMPORTANT





You probably have some Easter traditions that have been long-established over generations within your family. Some families have a special Easter breakfast together. Maybe you take a family walk at Easter. They fly kites in Bermuda on Good Friday. (I don't know why but it sounds fun!)


Hot Cross Buns are a well-known tradition for Good Friday, though they seem to appear in grocery stores soon after Christmas! Many families bake and enjoy them after church on Good Friday. Making and baking hot cross buns is also a wonderful way to share the story of Christ's sacrifice on the cross with your kids. And they'll certainly enjoy eating them. 😀


If you find it easier, you could read them the story from any of the books available for kids. (Find some below.)



2. Best books for easter





Reading good books is a great way to share the story and message of Easter in a way they'll enjoy. You don't have to wait until bedtime to read.


Try reading small passages when their hands are occupied with decorating eggs or working on activity pages. I found any mealtime was also a great time to read to my kids or grandkids. Check that the use of words and language style of the book yo've chosen to read is appropriate for the age of your kids.


Picture storybooks are wonderful, too. Even older kids will enjoy a well-written picture storybook.



3. Scavenger hunt for eggs or clues





If your kids or grandkids are older and like a challenge, how about a scavenger hunt?


Now, it's your choice. You can create your own or use one of the many pre-prepared clues, instructions and printables to be found online. Check out this 'Epic Scavenger Hunt' with clues like: 'Follow the clues to play; you'll find the first clue under your favourite shoe.'


Even better is 'The Easter Story Hunt'. There are 15 clues that need to be printed out, trimmed, folded and slipped inside plastic Easter eggs, and hidden.


Once all the pieces have been found and read, everyone helps to assemble the pieces in the correct order until the Easter story is complete.

4 resurrection eggs or resurrection stones





Resurrection Eggs each contain a small item that symbolises some part of the Easter story. Some families open one egg each day leading up to Easter to learn something new about the story of Easter, God's amazing love, and His plan to rescue us. Sometimes, the eggs are opened one by one at Easter. .. your choice.


Resurrection Stones are similar but you'll need to find smooth pebbles and decorate them to illustrate various aspects of the Easter story.

Create a resurrection garden together





Kids learn best when their hands are busy. So how about sharing the resurrection story with your kids while making a Resurrection Garden? This clip from Lifetree Kids demonstrates how to create this simple garden.

6. Easter colouring and activity pages or journals





There are times (probably not enough for tired parents) when a quiet activity like colouring or activity books is just what's needed.


Keep some printed pages ready along with some packs of crayons, markers or colour pencils for when they're needed. You can find free pages to download here.
